Getting My Home Wine-making Equipment

I have never made wine before but have a childhood memory of demi-johns bubbling away in our utility room, my mum talking about dandelion wine and other fruit wines that she had made (some particularly potent ones too!).

I thought I would have a go. I did some research on the internet to see what I would need. It was a bit confusing as different recipes required different equipment.

I went to my local Wilkinson and stocked up on what I thought I might need. I toyed with the idea of buying a starter kit with most of the equipment and I opened one up to see what was included. Costwise I decided that I was probably better off getting the idems individually. The kit came with two small plastic buckets whereas I preferred the idea of using demi johns, it also contained small sachets of yeast etc. which were fine for making the wine in the kit but I wanted to make wine from other ingredients too - such as my dandelion wine.

So I bought:
2 demi johns
1 syphoning tube with tap

2 air locks and rubber bungs

1 plastic sieve

1 plastic funnel

1 hydrometer

1 thermometer

1 tub of steriliser

1 tub of stabilising powder

1 tub of yeast

1 tub of yeast nutrient

1 tub of Campden tablets

1 packet of reusable plastic stoppers
