Parsnip Wine 03/01/10

One of the supermarkets were selling off their parsnips for 29p for 500g so I decided that it was the ideal time for making some wine! I used this recipe:

3 lbs / 1,350 grams parsnips
2 1/2 lbs / 1,134 grams sugar (orig recipe was 3lb but I prefer less sweet wine)
1/2 lb / 225 grams sultanas
2 oranges
1 lemons (only had 1 not 2!)
8 pints / 1 gallon water
Wine yeast

Winemaking Method:

Scrub and slice the parsnips and put into a large pan and simmer for five minutes. Strain through nylon sieve on to the sugar and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Add the chopped sultanas and juice of the oranges and lemons. When cool add the yeast and leave to ferment for seven days. Strain into a demijohn, fit airlock and leave to finish fermenting. When fermentation has ceased, rack the wine into a clean jar and place in a cooler environment and leave for a further few months. Rack again if necessary and leave until the wine is stable and then bottle.
